Thing 4:Blogging Song

Since I'm already connected, here's a song for all you SJ Learning 2 bloggers:

I got a blog,
You'll have a blog,
SJ Learning has a blog!
In February of two thousand seven
All of us'll be blogging, blogging
All of us'll be blogging.

Happy holidays to all you previewers!

This is Thing 3!

In this blog I have 2 (actually more) things!
I have shown them to you!
These (anonymous) things
I (didn't) call them Thing One and Thing Two!

With apologies to Dr. Seuss

I still need to tinker with this blogger beta account. Stay tuned!

Seven and a half habits of Successful Life Long Learning

I found the presentation very easy to access, though I couldn't download the contract. I took down notes in Microsoft Word. The assignment:

Which of the seven and a half habits is:
  • Easiest ? Habit 2: Accept responsibility for your own learning. Usually I don't wait for someone to suggest something I should learn. I'm always looking for opportunities and new experiences.
  • Hardest? Habit 7: Teach and mentor others. I usually don't pass on the experience, though I've learned that I learn more when I need to teach something, even if it's something I pass on one to one. Usually I don't think anyone else would be interested in what I'm learning. This points to Habit 4: Have confidence in yourself as a confident effective learner.

I've never created a learning contract, but it's a good idea.

It's time to be serious

The library's Learning 2.0 program based on Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County (North Carolina) will be launched in January. Now I'll have to get serious and start logging what I've learned. Even though I've worked through some of the PLCMC exercises, there are others I've reviewed and haven't put into action. I confess that I still don't have a digital camera, that I'm uneasy using Flickr and Technorati. Watch this blog. I'll be sharing my joys and frustrations.

Trying to set up avatar

Yahoo! Avatars
This is my avatar. I've tried to make it look like me. I think it's worked, though I must work with centering this.

Blog Things and History Conference

I'm working on adding things to my blog, but haven't been very successful. I've got bloglines and librarything and delicious (you know what I mean).
I've been busy the past weekend attending a local history conference. This group of local historians likes to have fun but isn't very active, (mostly septagenarians plus) so they take bus tours. Some of the program activities advertised didn't take place (bummer -- Organizing a display talk by a curator of one of the area's largest and innovative museums was one of the drawcards) and the tours were rushed. But I made some contacts for library programming and went to some places I wouldn't have gone on my own or with Dr. Djonz (who prefers to go by train).

Kite Runner

Last night I helped facilitate a discussion on Khaled Hosseini's book "The Kite Runner" which is the CSSJ Reads book for this school year. It's an engaging book.

Salwar Kameez

Why do you wear Pakistani dress?(when you're not Pakistani, the questioner implied) I'd like to see the salwar kameez (three part costume (tunic=salwar, drawstring trousers=kameez and shawl=dupatta) become as internationally popular as blue jeans. When I need a lift, especially on Sundays when I work in the library, I like to wear salwar kameez, the pantsuit worn in India, Pakistan and other nearby countries. It's comfortable, feminine, adjustable and practical. I've bought several suits in local Indian fabric and sari shops for the price of a dress or separates at mall stores. Sometimes it's difficult to find a comparatively plain set, though they do exist. Draping the dupatta can be awkward at first, but try several styles until you are comfortable. Learn to tie a strong, but easily releaseable knot to keep the kameez in place. I'd like to see pockets in the kameez; this should be easy to do if you make your own. There are a number of patterns on the web -- you may need to look under belly dance costume.

New Shopping Cart

Reliable #1 cart fell apart two weeks ago. Smaller #2 works for most purposes, but not for heavy duty or laundry; Dr Djonz had to use the Rumblermaid wheelbarrow to take three clothes bags, soap, etc. to the laundromat. Today I bought a "swiveler" multi-use 4 wheel folding cart at the big hardware supply store. (Longs and Walgreens didn't have them) This one has front swiveling wheels and an adjustable handle. Shelia from customer service helped me assemble it. Most parts snapped in easily, but we needed a mallet to lock the rear wheels in place. It's nice to have these new wheels. Dr. Djonz was disappointed that Consumer Reports didn't rate shopping carts. C.R. doesn't rate everything useful.

In the garden

It's tomato season and I'm harvesting lots of tomatoes. I planted seeds I'd saved from heirloom tomatoes last year and slipped shoots for a long season. Red, green and yellow tomatoes, but mainly yellow. Few pumpkins to harvest. Concord grapes are ripe --my favorites.

Beginning

I'm starting this blog on September 11, 2006. I learned about the World Trade Center attack (2001) when I turned on the radio for the morning news. That day I took my radio and headphones to work and listened to NPR for updates. I hadn't heard of Bin Laden or Al-Qaida.
